How much does a heat pump actually cost to run?

Sona Air · Auckland

Running cost is the first thing most people ask about, so here is a straight answer instead of the usual it depends. A modern heat pump is the cheapest comfortable way to warm a New Zealand home because it moves heat rather than making it. For every unit of electricity it draws, it delivers three to four units of heat. That efficiency is why a right-sized, well-installed heat pump can cut heating costs by up to 40 percent compared with plug-in heaters or older systems.

The biggest factor in your running cost is sizing. An undersized unit runs flat out and never quite warms the room, while an oversized one short-cycles and wastes power. This is why we measure on site rather than guessing from floor area. We look at room volume, ceiling height, insulation and how much sun the space gets, then size the system so it reaches a comfortable temperature quickly and holds it efficiently.

How you run it matters too. Setting a sensible target temperature, using the timer, and keeping the filters clean all reduce what you spend. We walk every customer through this at handover, because the cheapest heat pump to run is one that is set up and maintained properly.
